Steel modernisation deploys augmented reality for remote testing

A modernisation package using digital technologies will improve efficiency, increase reliability and boost quality at Global Steel Wire’s facility in Santander.

A package of metals industry-specific digital-ready solutions from ABB is set to help improve efficiency, increase reliability and boost quality at Global Steel Wire’s (GSW) facility in Santander.

GSW manufactures and brings to market a range of steel products, including wire rod, cables and ropes. The cables are used extensively in the automotive industry, as well as in mattress springs. The steelmaker has been exploring the use of digital technologies to optimise its rolling wire production.

Teams from the two companies had the chance to incorporate the use of augmented reality (AR) during the Factory Acceptance Test (FAT), with representatives at the LCI factory in Switzerland collaborating with others in Spain. It encompassed audio, video, document-sharing and live annotations. This allowed progress to continue during the COVID-19 travel limitations.

The technologies being deployed include drives, controller and converter infrastructure. ABB’s demand-based Megadrive-LCI medium voltage drives, together with AC 800PEC controllers, will result in optimised power consumption and higher process efficiency.

The Megadrive-LCI is an advanced type of converter that enables variable speed control and soft starting of large synchronous machines. It uses a fuse-less drive design and robust thyristor components, which enable fast and successful start-up, optimum power consumption and high process efficiency.

“The modernisation and upgrades project at our Santander mill is well underway,” said Iago López García, Rolling Mill Electrical Maintenance Manager, Global Steel Wire. “We look forward to the completion of this phase of activity and ongoing mill operations.”

LCI technology allows all types of connection and remote optimisation, including software updates, readjustments when there are changes in the process, visualisation and system analysis.
